When His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V), made his first trip to Europe
in 1897, he developed friendly relations with European leaders and shared a
photograph with Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. Pictures of them together and other
images from his tour were published in newspapers throughout Europe. On his
second trip to Europe in 1907, His Majesty posed for artists to paint his royal
portraits. One of the artists he hired was the French painter Charles Emile Auguste
Carolus-Duran. Born in 1837, Carolus-Duran was renowned for his detailed
and vividly realistic portraits. He won a prize at the Paris Salon art exhibition
in 1869, which led to numerous commissions from European royalty, aristocrats,
and wealthy patrons. Carolus-Duran9s fame likely caught the attention of King
Rama V. While staying in San Remo, Italy, His Majesty summoned Carolus-Duran
from his studio in Paris to paint his royal portrait. Upon inspecting the residence,
Carolus-Duran found the lighting inadequate and decided to rent the studio
of Italian painter Francesco Margotti as a painting space. In May 1907, King
Rama V posed as a model at this studio for several days. His Majesty expressed
his admiration for Carolus-Duran9s talent in a royal letter to Princess Nibha
Nobhadol. During this period, Carolus-Duran painted three similar portraits,
including a sizeable full-size portrait. He took this portrait back to his studio in
Paris to add more details before its final delivery months later. This image was
also exhibited in Paris. The displayed image is an art print using the etching
technique derived from Carolus-Duran9s original work. It depicts King Rama V
in full royal garb with a white jacket adorned with robes, a white headdress
decorated with feather tassels, and various royal decorations on his chest and
shoulder strap. These were the same clothes His Majesty wore during his visit to
France and Europe in 1897.
