Sakwut Wisesmanee, a Thai artist renowned for his portraiture,
is widely recognized as one of the most esteemed figures
in contemporary art. His artwork stands out for its expressive
lines, vibrant colors, agility, and emotional depth conveyed
through the traces of pencil, brush, and charcoal strokes.
Employing various overlapping layers of tools, such as crayon,
graphite, paint and ink, Sakwut9s artworks intentionally
integrate paper and fabric as significant elements, effectively
narrating stories and the artistic process. Sakwut graduated
from Silpakorn University, majoring in painting. During his
student years and shortly after graduation, most of his works
were portraits of close acquaintances, predominantly of
himself. However, shortly after completing his studies, Sakwut
ventured into the advertising and publishing industry as an
illustrator for magazines, a flourishing era in the media
business at the time. Nevertheless, Sakwut later decided
to return to his passion for drawing as an independent
artist, dedicating himself to creating works in styles that
he enjoys and finds compelling. Eventually, he gained
significant recognition in the present day. One of Sakwut9s
remarkable artworks is the portrait of Professor Silpa Bhirasri,
created in 2019. For this piece, the artist chose a reference
photo from the professor9s youth and utilized white and
black charcoal as the primary drawing tools on paper. The
dense, confident lines, filled with vigor, are the hallmark
of Sakwut9s style, prominently displayed in this artwork.
The black and white colors effectively capture the play
of light and shadow with precision and vitality, reflecting
the artist9s mastery and unique skill set.
