Chatchai Puipia, the recipient of the Silpathorn Award in Visual Arts for the year
2006, was born in 1964 in Maha Sarakham Province. He is a significant artist whose
paintings have greatly influenced and inspired the contemporary art scene in
Thailand. His reputation extends both nationally and internationally. Chatchai
completed his education at Suankularb Wittayalai School and continued his
studies in the Department of Painting at Silpakorn University, where he graduated
in 1988. He received silver medals (painting catagory) from the 34th and 35th
National Exhibition of Art (1988-1989) and has continuously developed his work
since then. He has been recognized as one of the new generations of Thai artists
who challenge traditional boundaries of artistic expression during a period of
burgeoning contemporary art in Thailand. Chatchai9s works often employ his
own face as a primary tool for conveying meaning, alongside other elements
and environments depicted in his paintings. These works create an imaginative
world parallel to reality, reflecting sarcasm and irony. Many of his pieces feature
exaggerated expressions on his face, bordering on the depiction of insanity.
Additionally, Chatchai9s painting techniques are rich with vibrant colors and
