The sketch of artwork with pen drawing on paper technique
The content of Thawan Duchanee9s artwork evolved over
time. Initially, in the 1950s, Thawan focused on depicting
the way of life in Thai society. Later, his work developed
to question and critique social events, addressing both
lifestyles and beliefs. His themes often revolved around the
chaos and desires that conflicted with Buddhist principles.
This tension led to an incident in 1971 where his work was
vandalized and he was accused of desecrating Buddhism.
After this event, Thawan shifted his creative process towards
interpreting stories through symbols of animals and humans,
exploring beliefs, Buddhism, and other religions. He expressed
these themes with unique symbolic forms and characters,
establishing a new traditional art form that gained
widespread recognition.
