Montien Boonma is one of the pioneering contemporary artists in Thailand,
renowned internationally for his work in contemporary art. Born in 1953, he began
his art studies at Poh-Chang Academy of Arts (1971-1973) and continued at the
Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Graphic Arts, Silpakorn University, graduating
in painting in 1978. He started his career as a teacher at the College of Fine
Arts, Department of Fine Arts, before pursuing further studies in sculpture in Italy
in 1985 and at the Ecole Nationale SupŽrieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, France
(1986-1987). Upon returning to Thailand, Montien joined the Faculty of Fine Arts
at Chiang Mai University and pioneered experimental art using diverse materials.
Montien continuously created art and participated in numerous international
art festivals. He passed away at the young age of 47 in 2000 due to cancer.
