Preecha Thaothong, a National Artist in the field of visual arts (painting) from
the year 2009, is renowned for his unique fusion of traditional Thai painting and
Western styles. He employs the interplay of light and shadow to narrate stories
and convey concepts. Preecha has produced a wide range of artworks, but
he is best known for his paintings that depict the geometric shapes formed by
sunlight as it illuminates architectural structures, casting intricate patterns of light
and dark shadows. In many of his works, he incorporates traditional Thai mural
designs as details within the architecture, which, when interacting with light
and shadow, create a complex and visually stunning effect with meticulous
detail. Born in 1948, Preecha graduated with a bachelor9s degree in 1972 and
a master9s degree in 1979 from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture and Graphic
Arts at Silpakorn University. He received a scholarship to study art in Rome, Italy,
and upon his return, he became an art instructor while continuing to create
art consistently up to the present day.
