Panya Vijinthanasarn, a National Artist in the field of visual arts (painting) for
the year 2014, is known for evolving traditional Thai art into a modern form. He
graduated with a bachelor9s degree from the Thai Art Department, Faculty of
Painting, Sculpture and Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University in 1980. He had the
opportunity to create mural paintings at the Buddhapadipa Temple in London
and received a scholarship from the British Council to study printmaking at
the Slade School of Fine Arts. Panya9s paintings are inspired by Buddhism, its
teachings, Buddhist history, and the interpretation of Buddhist principles in the
context of contemporary events. Although the characters in his works inherit
traditional forms, Panya employs modern painting techniques and unique
compositional methods. He adds imaginative characters, creates atmospheres
with scientific colors, and integrates ready-made materials, distinguishing his
work from traditional art. Furthermore, Panya extends his two-dimensional works
into three-dimensional forms, often translating shapes, characters, and events
from paintings into sculptural narratives.
