Chalermchai Kositpipat, a National Artist in the field of visual arts (painting) from
the year 2011, is one of Thailand9s most renowned and recognizable artists. He
is known for creating traditional Thai art that has evolved into a unique form
of personal expression. Born in 1955 in Chiang Rai, Chalermchai studied art
at Poh-Chang Academy of Arts and the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and
Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University. He was among the first graduates from the
Thai Art Department in 1978. Chalermchai has shown a strong commitment
to linking traditional Thai art with contemporary Thai life. He led a group of
volunteer artists to create mural paintings at the Buddhapadipa Temple in
England. Upon returning to Thailand, he continued to create art, achieving
significant success and inspiring both younger artists and the public widely. In
1996, Chalermchai began the design and construction of the Buddhist ordination
hall (Phra Ubosot) at Wat Rong Khun, an ancient temple in his hometown
originally built in 1887 during the reign of King Rama V. He aimed to continue
the temple9s restoration, which had stalled due to the economic crisis, using

symbolize the Buddha9s wisdom. Wat Rong Khun has become a major tourist
attraction in Chiang Rai, showcasing unique and distinctive Buddhist art. It has
played a significant role in driving the development of the province.
