During Tawan Duchnanee9s art education in Thailand, his works exhibited
contemporary expressions aligned with Western trends. However, during his sojourn
abroad from 1963 to 1968, Thawan9s works began to reflect a growing interest
in Eastern philosophies and beliefs. In the 1970s, his works began to critique the
Thai social landscape, incorporating symbols and elements of Buddhist archite
tural motifs fused with animal forms and nude human figures. This fusion led to
misinterpretations among certain segments of society, culminating in a group of
high school students vandalizing and destroying around ten of Thawan9s paintings
displayed at the Christian Students9 Center in 1971. Following this incident, Thawan
shifted his creative focus towards interpreting narratives, philosophies, legends, and
Buddhist scriptures. However, he continued to present the fusion of human body
forms with various animals consistently.
