Over several decades, Thawan consistently produced
artworks in various forms, including painting, drawing,
sculpture, installation art, and traditional craft, such as the
traditional dharma scriptural cabinet. Each of his works
reflected his dedication, technical prowess, sharpness, and
the transcendence of the artist9s journey. This particular
traditional dharma scriptural cabinet is among the set of
three cabinets, symbolizing the Buddha, the Dharma, and
the Sangha, three fundamental foundations of Buddhism.
This rectangular pyramid-shaped cabinet symbolizes the
Buddha. The four sides represent the four elements of earth,
water, air, and fire. Each panel filled with intricate details
and symbolism, featuring various types of wild animals
positioned to convey meaning, such as land-animals,
water-animals, air-animals, and the angry cruel animals.
Some of these animals were based on real creatures
found in nature, while others were mythical beings from
literature and folklore. The surrealistic qualities of this piece
reflect the artist9s imaginative interpretation, blurring the
lines between reality and fantasy, blending traditional Thai
motifs with newly designed patterns. Thawan9s meticulous
attention to detail, combined with his fluid and dynamic
designs, using only two colors, gold and black, creates a
sense of depth and intensity, capturing the essence of
the artist9s identity.
