Lawan Upa-In, a prominent female artist with a remarkable and adventurous
history, often played the role of a pioneer. She was a first-generation student
at the Silpakorn University Preparatory School (later renamed the College of
Fine Arts). Lawan graduated and became the first female fine arts graduate
from Silpakorn University. In 2016, she was honoured as the first female National
Artist in Visual Arts.
In 1963, Lawan, along with Pranee Tantisuk and Suwanni Sukhontha, exhibited
their works at the Bangkapi Gallery, marking the first exhibition by a group of
female artists in Thailand. Lawan gained fame for her portrait paintings and
was entrusted with creating portraits for the royal court and the elite. However,
in the 1960s, she became a political target. Leftists accused her of serving the
dictatorship because she painted a portrait of Field Marshal Thanom Kittikachorn,
leading to the destruction of her paintings and studio. During the events of
October 6, 1976, right-wing factions accused her of being a communist, causing
great fear for her and her family.
After experiencing political conflicts, Lawan began to create paintings that
addressed her political experiences and broader social and political issues.
She also participated in activities with the Artists9 Front of Thailand and social
and political activist groups, playing a significant role in the intersection
of art and politics. In 2002, she received the Manas Siansingh
