Sompot Upa-In graduated from Poh-Chang Academy of Arts and continued his
higher education at the Faculty of Painting and Sculpture at Silpakorn University,
where he chose to study sculpture. He preferred sculpture because it allowed him
to use the free clay provided by the faculty, which was more economical than
purchasing expensive paints for painting. Sompot was one of the progressive
students and a favourite of Professor Silpa Bhirasri. After graduation, he was
selected to teach at the Faculty of Painting and Sculpture. His works submitted
to the National Art Exhibition between 1959 and 1969 won several awards.
At Silpakorn University, Sompot met Lawan Daorai (later Lawan Upa-In), the
daughter of a navy admiral, who was also a student in the same faculty.
Lawan, known for her beauty and talent, had many admirers, but the poor
young artist Sompot won her heart. Sompot married Lawan and gave her 100
of his paintings as a dowry.
Lawan Upa-In had a remarkable and pioneering career. She was part of the
first cohort at the Silpakorn University Preparatory School (later renamed the
College of Fine Arts). She became the first female fine arts graduate from
Silpakorn University. 2016, she was honoured as the first female National Artist
in Visual Arts. Lawan gained fame for her portraits and was entrusted with
creating portraits for the royal court.
