Chalerm Nakiraks gained fame for his watercolour and oil
paintings, often depicting portraits, temple landscapes,
and vibrant scenes of everyday life in floating markets. After
World War II, during the late 1940s to the 1950s, Chalerm
emerged as a pioneer in creating watercolour paintings
of Buddhist temples and Thai life. These paintings became
popular among wealthy Thai individuals and expatriates
living in Thailand, marking the rise of a new culture of
Modern Art trading.
Chalerm modernised traditional Thai painting by integrating
key elements of Thai traditional style with Realism. He combined
the graceful depiction of figures, flat colour application,
and outlining of objects typical of Thai conventional art
with realistic techniques like shading, atmospheric effects,
and perspective.
