Niro Yokota was a Japanese artist born in 1895 in Tochigi
Prefecture on Honshu Island. He had a background in
painting, origami, and Japanese crafts. During World
War II, the Japanese government sent Yokota to assist
in teaching art at the Poh-Chang Academy of Arts from
1940 to 1962. After retiring, Yokota lived in Thailand until
he died in 1982 at 89.

Yokota9s distinctive paintings often depicted Thai life along
rivers and canals, showcasing traditional Thai houses,
temples, native trees, the daily activities of villagers, various
boats, and floating markets. These paintings were commonly
referred to as 8floating market scenes9. He frequently
used the floating markets as models, such as the Wat Sai
floating market and the markets in Nonthaburi. Yokota9s
memorable painting technique involved using delicate
lines and watercolour on paper. After World War II, besides
Yokota, many Thai painters also created floating market
scenes. These included artists such as Sawasdi Tantisuk,
Chalerm Nakiraks, and Kid Kosalwat, who also painted
various other themes. However, Yokota was the only one
who consistently and seriously focused on floating market
scenes for an extended period.

Since the end of World War II, floating market scenes
have gained immense popularity in commercial galleries
that sell paintings as souvenirs for tourists or for decorating
the homes of wealthy individuals and expatriates living in
Thailand. The painting of a woman in traditional Thai dress
is an oil painting that differs from Yokota9s typical works. He
created this painting with bold brush strokes, giving it a fresh
and accessible feel devoid of elaborate details. Yokota
painted this in 1982, at 87, just two years before his death.
