Chakrabhand Posayakrit, a highly talented artist, excelled in realistic and
traditional Thai painting. Additionally, he mastered the art of puppetry, designing
and creating puppets, costumes, and sets, and performing with the puppets
himself. These exceptional skills garnered widespread acclaim, leading to his
recognition as a National Artist in Visual Arts (Painting) in 2000.
During the 1950s, while still in high school, Chakrabhand had the opportunity
to observe portrait painting by Raden Basuki Abdullah, an Indonesian artist in
the Thai royal court. Before enrolling at the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and
Graphic Arts at Silpakorn University, Chakrabhand took private lessons from
Professor Silpa Bhirasri and Chamras Khietkong. Unfortunately, he did not have
the chance to study formally under Professor Silpa Bhirasri, as Professor Bhirasri
passed away in 1962 before Chakrabhand entered Silpakorn University. Four
years after Professor Bhirasri9s death, Chakrabhand had the opportunity to paint
a portrait of Malinee Bhirasri, the beautiful widow of Professor Silpa Bhirasri.
Through Chakrabhand9s keen eye and skilful brushwork, the portrait of Malinee
Bhirasri comes to life. She is depicted with a fashionable updo, determined
eyes, a small dimple at the corner of her mouth, pink lips, and a red dress
that adds vibrancy to the painting. Chakrabhand painted this portrait in 1966
while still a student. This piece is considered one of Chakrabhand9s early works.
During this period, he preferred to paint skin tones with relatively dark colours,
leaving noticeable brushstrokes. This technique contrasts with his style in the
1970s after graduation, when he began painting with brighter, softer colours
and smoother brushwork. This evolution helped establish Chakrabhand9s unique
and recognisable artistic identity.
