Raden Basoeki Abdullah, born in 1915, hailed from the island of Java in Indonesia.
His lineage included regional nobility, and he inherited his artistic talents from his
father, a leading painter. Raden pursued art studies in The Hague, Netherlands.
Upon returning to Indonesia, he gained prominence painting portraits for elite
figures domestically and internationally, including the Presidents of Indonesia,
the Philippines, the United States, the Sultan of Brunei, and the Queen of the
Netherlands.
In 1960, Raden was invited to serve as a court painter in Thailand. His initial
commission involved painting royal portraits of King Ananda Mahidol
(King Rama VII), King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX), and Queen Sirikit.
These portraits would be displayed alongside those of Kings Rama I to Rama VII
in the Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall. Raden worked at Chitralada Palace
and the Grand Palace for over a decade.
