Pratuang Emjaroen is a self-taught independent artist who did not graduate
from any formal art institution. He gained recognition from all sectors due to
his work quality and robust and distinct persona. His vivid personal history,
rising from a 8starving artist9 to the status of 8National Artist9, coupled with his
distinctive appearance, e.g. his clothing, hair, and beard has made Pratuang
a legendary figure in Thai art.
Since the 1950s, Pratuang Emjaroen has focused on themes of life9s vitality and
nature, depicted through paintings of water droplets, lotus leaves, rice grains,
fields, oceans, skies, the sun, the moon, and the universe. During the politically
tense period from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s in Thailand, Pratuang and
other contemporary artists created art that reflected and critiqued social and
political issues. Many of Pratuang9s paintings from this time have become iconic,
covering themes of life, nature, society, and politics.
One notable work,
