Thawan painted this oil piece on a canvas with a black base. He used a
palette knife to apply lighter or brighter colours for the illuminated parts of
the subjects, leaving the shadows and outlines as the black base canvas. This
technique created scattered traces of black across the painting, adding a
rough, textured surface that enhanced the painting9s power. The palette knife
technique produced flat, planar marks distinct from Thawan9s many paintings
created with brushes and pens, giving this piece a unique flavour.
