Prayat Pongdam, born in Sing Buri, grew up amidst the natural rural environment
of fields and farms. His childhood experiences and the atmosphere of his
hometown, far from material advancement, profoundly influenced his art
throughout his life. He moved to Bangkok to study art at Poh-Chang Academy
of Arts and Silpakorn University. Before travelling to Rome, Italy, in the early 1950s,
Prayat began developing his unique artistic style. He favoured the mysterious
ambience of the countryside and ancient ruins, as seen in his oil paintings
depicting the dim atmosphere of ruins in the temples and palaces of Ayutthaya and
the rural life of Thailand.
