Mesiem Yipintsoi, an untrained yet profoundly influential
female artist, developed her passion for art while touring
some of Europe9s finest art establishments. At 40, as a married
woman and mother of five, Mesiem began painting
under Japanese painter Munet Satomi, a former cultural
ambassador to Thailand. After approximately ten months of
training, Mesiem submitted an oil painting to the inaugural
National Art Exhibition in 1949, where she won a gold
medal. Her subsequent entries in the second and third
exhibitions also earned her medals, leading to her recognition
as the first and only woman to be honoured as an
