Prakit (Jitr) Buabusaya is one of Thailand9s pivotal artists who pioneered modern
painting in the early 1930s. Prakit and Fua Haribhitak studied at the Poh-Chang
Academy of Arts. They learned Impressionist painting from Khun Patipak Pimlikhit.
During that period, Prakit and Fua often travelled to paint landscapes outside
the city, following the practices of Impressionist artists. In 1941, Prakit received a
scholarship to study in Japan. He set sail for Japan just three weeks before Japan
attacked Pearl Harbor and its entry into World War II.
Prakit studied at the Tokyo Academy of Fine Art under Kunzo Minami from 1941
to 1945. During his time in Japan, Prakit painted over 60 oil landscape paintings.
He left these works at the residence of the Thai embassy advisor in Tokyo. Most
of these paintings were destroyed in the bombings by the Allies, with only a few
small pieces surviving, which Prakit had kept himself.
