In the early 1940s, sculptors like Khien Yimsiri and Chit Rienpracha pioneered
the blend of Thai and modern styles by depicting the lives of ordinary people.
By the late 1940s to the 1950s, this trend of illustrating Thai life, akin to the earlier
sculptures, began to gain popularity among painters and printmakers. Prominent
artists in this movement included Chalood Nimsamer, with his paintings and
prints; Manit Poo-Aree, known for his tempera paintings; Chalerm Nakiraks,
who frequently used watercolour; Prayat Pongdam, who created paintings and
prints, and Inson Wongsam and Praphan Srisouta who preferred printmaking.
Damrong Wong-Uparaj, during his twenties, primarily worked with tempera and
oil painting, gaining significant recognition for his depictions of fishing village life.
