The portrait photograph of Manit Poo-Aree
Manit Poo-Aree began his art education at Poh-Chang Academy of Arts
and continued his higher education at the Faculty of Painting and Sculpture,
Silpakorn University. In 1962, Manit was honoured as an 8Outstanding Artist9
at the National Art Exhibition. In the same year, he received a scholarship to
study in Italy. From the late 1940s to the 1950s, Manit9s notable works included
paintings and prints that depicted Thai life, such as Thai women in traditional
attire with sashes and Jongkraben (a type of conventional Thai pants), bustling
around the countryside or Thai men playing Takraw with great enthusiasm.
Manit favoured techniques that involved flat colour application with fine brush
outlining. Some of his works included gold leaf. Faces in his paintings often
appeared in profile, and the figures9 postures displayed gracefulness. These
depictions of rural life bore similarities to traditional Thai murals found on temple
walls, yet with a significant difference. While temple murals focused on sacred
religious themes with villagers as mere background characters in Buddhist tales
or historical narratives, Manit9s works positioned villagers as the central figures.
