Khien Yimsiri (1922-1971) was born in Bang Chang Lor
Subdistrict, Bangkok Noi, Bangkok. His artistic journey
commenced at the School of Fine Arts under the Fine Arts
Department, where he honed his skills and completed
advanced studies in craftsmanship from the Sculpture
Department. Khien9s exceptional talent earned him a
prestigious scholarship from the Ministry of Education, which
enabled him to further his sculptural education for one
year at the esteemed Chelsea School of Art in London,
England, under the guidance of the world-renowned
sculptor Henry Moore. In 1953, he received a scholarship
from the Ministry of Education and the Italian government
to study sculpture and art history at the Academy of
Fine Arts of Rome in Italy. Khien Yimsiri gained invaluable
experience working at the Fine Arts Department and
teaching at the School of Decorative Arts, which later
became Silpakorn University in 1964. In the same year,
Khien succeeded Professor Silpa Bhirasri as acting Dean of
the Faculty of Painting and Sculpture at Silpakorn University.
He also held significant positions in various art organizations.
Khien was known as one of Professor Bhirasri9s closest students,
having studied and taught alongside the esteemed professor.
He also translated many of Bhirasri9s writings into Thai. Khien
achieved great success with his modern sculptural works,
presenting pieces that seamlessly blended traditional Thai
art with contemporary Western sculptural styles. His
exceptional talent earned him acclaim as an outstanding
artist at the National Art Exhibition. This sculptural portrait
of Professor Silpa Bhirasri, created in 1945, exemplifies
Khien9s early artistic approach. The sculpture masterfully
captures his revered teacher9s essence, character, and
emotions with remarkable realism and beauty.
