Dear Khien,
Firenze 2nd November 1947
With great pleasure I have received your letter
of the 17th October and I thank you so much for the kind remembrance
you have for me. As I have said to dear Fua my heart is ALWAYS with you
and Siam; the life of the West is no more fitted for me and I feel terribly
depressed. I have to stay here to cure myself but otherwise I would have
already started back. As soon as I left Siam I began to be deeply
taciturn and once in Italy I found my things very upset, and for worse
than what I could expect. I had to pay a lot for repairing the house and
for my son etc. etc, all these unexpected facts influenced my nerves
already shaken and thus my health suffered; but now I feel better and I
hope in a few weeks I shall be alright.
As I have told Fua, art here is affected by the high cost of materials
etc. so there is a crisis of artistic production. Music only seems to
keep alive the flame of art, while literature is not very much developed
on account of the tremendous cost of books. People are very busy to keep
them alive and to enjoy the most possible, so they have no much time to
spare for reading, consequently the intellectual standard is going down.
If you see a town of the West it seems a machine going at full speed, and
anyone is pushing the other to go on, on &where?, to earn money, the gold,
the evil of Humanity. Nowadays is the triumph of materialism; the spirit
seems have no reason to be taken in consideration.
The war has brought misery and a lot of difficulties, but Man
is striving to emerge over the others on any mean is good for reaching the
goal. Let us hope that our dear Siam may be affected the least
possible by this terrible modern civilization and may keep the purity of
the old culture the longest possible.
Glad to here that you have worked for the Constitutional fair and hope
a fine success for you and all the other artists.
Love always each others, love your art and make for it some sacrifice,
try to be always united and forget and forgive others small offences.
We leave only once in our actual surrounding, so let us get from it the
best spiritual part. Say To Paitun, Piman, Siddhided, Heup, Suk, Sanit,
Prasong, Pinit, Vichit and all other pupils of mine that I do not write personally
to everyone, but I have always them in my heart.
to you and to all my best wishes and thoughts.
Yours C. Feroci
