Tyler Schwartz:
Eden Coren:
Tyler has spent several months working with the
Long Island chapter of Achilles International.
Tyler loves anything sports-related but his
favorites are baseball, basketball and golf. He
also really enjoys endurance sports and has
been doing 5 mile road races since he was 5 as
well as triathlons. Achilles raises funds, helps
train, organizes races and guides athletes with
physical and developmental disabilities as they
race. If you have ever watched a marathon, and
noticed a blind athlete tethered to a guide
runner, that was probably Achilles. Helping those
with visual impairment and other physical
challenges compete and train in athletics has
been extremely meaningful for Tyler. By helping
athletes with their training, helping guide them
during their races and raising funds for what is an
expensive endeavor for these athletes, Tyler has
learned that people can overcome some
challenges with a positive attitude and hard
work, and has also showed him that even one
person helping can make a difference. Achilles
Long Island allowed Tyler to combine his love of
athletics with his desire to help people. He feels
very lucky to be able to compete in sports.
Achilles athletes love sports just as much as he
does and it was an honor and privilege for him to
be able to help them reach their athletic goals.
Growing up with severe food allergies has not been
easy, and I'm often in uncomfortable situations like
eating at other people's homes, going to new
restaurants and being on vacations. I always have
to have medicine with me in case I accidentally eat
something I’m allergic to. While this isn’t easy or
comfortable for me, I have learned that I can handle
my food allergies and that taking chances eating
outside of my home is an important part of life, and
I wouldn’t want to miss out on these experiences.

I know that I’m lucky that my parents had access to
doctors and epipens and were able to teach me
how to live with my food allergies. So, for my
mitzvah project I wanted to help other children who
have serious food allergies by helping to raise
awareness and money for a non profit organization
called, Food Allergy Research & Education or
(FARE). This organization works on behalf of the 15
million Americans with food allergies. It’s mission is
to improve the quality of life and the health of
individuals with food allergies to and provide them
hope through the promise of new treatments. I
have raised money for FARE through donations and
I am also having a bake sale with all allergy friendly
foods that I will bake at home. I plan to donate all
the money raised from this bake sale to FARE.
