Dungannon sale to feature offspring
of prominent Limousins
T
HE British Limousin Cattle Society’s autumn sale
of pedigree bulls and
females will take place
on Friday, November 17,
at Dungannon Mart. The catalogue features 32 pedigree bulls
and 10 females from many of the
Province’s leading herds.
Many of the bulls on offer are
progeny of prominent Limousin
sires, which will offer interest
to commercial and pedigree
buyers alike. While the breeders’
bulls may well hit the headline
prices, commercial producers
are without doubt showing their
enthusiasm for the breed.
Highlighting this, at the recent
BLCS sales held at both Carlisle
and Stirling commercial buyers
clearly underpinned the trade. At
Carlisle 60 per cent of the bulls
forward sold for between 4,000
and 8,000gns and at Stirling well
over 40 per cent fell into this price
range. A feature of both these
sales has been the emphasis
buyers have been placing on bulls
that had good calving figures
along with length, shape and
good tops.
Beef producers are looking
for easy calving, easy care
cattle that are feed efficient and
producing high end suckled
calves with tremendous carcase
attributes. The Limousin breed
is synonymous with these traits
and that’s what is driving the
continued and increased demand
around the UK.

with sires from the renowned
Ampertaine Herd of W J and J J
McKay, Maghera. The 120 cow
Ampertaine herd has established
a reputation for prolific sales
of high quality breeding bulls.
The herd’s philosophy is to
concentrate
on
bulls
that
emphasise easy calving, but
are modern in type with length,
shape, plenty of second thigh,
and with good mobility.
The Ampertaine herd, whose
breeding has an increasingly
significant fingerprint on the
UK Limousin herdbook, sells
around 50 bulls each year with
the majority going to commercial
producers at 13 to 14 months of
age.
Movenis Master and Movenis
Major, Mullansfort Murphy, Eniver
Magic and Rahoney Moses are all
by the noted Ampertaine Elgin. By
Glenrick Venture out of the Samy
daughter Ampertaine Carla, Elgin
has produced an array of progeny
selling well into five figures. Most
recently, Gorrycam Major from
Gorrycam Limousins, Newry, and
Grahams Michael from R&J
Graham, Stirling, both sold at
20,000gns at Carlisle in October.
Annadale Marshmallow, Greenvale Muscular, Aghadolgan Malcolm, Castlerock Minstral and
Annadale Matador are all by the
noted Ampertaine Foreman. By
the 50,000gns Wilodge Cerberus,
Foreman is out of a superb cow,
the Sympa daughter, Ampertaine
Bathsheba; who is full sister to the
mother of the prolific Ampertaine
Commander.
Foreman has a Beef Value in the
top 1% of recorded Limousins,
as are his 400 day growth
and muscle depth. He too has
produced a strong collection of
bulls which consistently prove to
be popular with buyers, the latest
being Ballinloan Mountain from
Stuart Fotheringham, Dunkeld,
who also sold at Carlisle last
month for 20,000gns.
Greenvale Mark and Rahoney
Malachi are both by another
Ampertaine bull, this time one
who has truly made his mark on
Limousin breeding, Ampertaine
Gigolo, sire of the 147,000gns
world record priced Limousin
bull Trueman Jagger.
Gigolo, by Ampertaine Commander out of the powerful Ronick
Gains cow Ampertaine Crystal,
is described as a fast growing
bull. Carrying tremendous performance figures, he is in the top
1% of recorded animals for 200
and 400 day weight and has a top
1% Beef Value.
Away from Ampertaine sires,
also catalogued is Knockroe
Madmax by the sire Loosebeare
Fantastic who was bred by
the Quick family in Devon.
Fantastic, a son of 42,000gns sire
Wilodge Vantastic and out of the
Broadmeadows Cannon daughter
Loosebear Sacha also carries a
Beef Value well inside the top 1%
of the breed.
Another bull for sale is
Craignageragh Mario who is
sired by Gerrygullinane Glen.
By Marchermore Augustus, a
son of the highly acclaimed
Ronick Hawk, Glen’s dam is
Derrygullinane Daisy who has a
pedigree going back to Mas Du
Clo and Generaux. Bred by Gerry
Walsh in County Mayo, Glen’s

progeny tend to be shapely with
plenty of muscle.
The Sympa son Haltcliffe
Dancer features in the sale
with two of his young offspring
catalogued, Spage Murphy and
Ashmara Mimosa. Bred by Craig
Ridley, Cumbria, Dancer is out of
Cloughhead Romany.
Another bull for sale sired by a
noted Limousin is Carnew Marios
by Lodge Hamlet. Bred by W &
A Callion in Scotland, the Saphir
son Hamlet has a dam line going
back to Broadmeadows Cannon.
Hamlet has demonstrated the
easy
calving
characteristics
buyers are searching out with
progeny being born unassisted
from
dairy,
pedigree
and
commercial herds.
Culnagechan Muller by Iveagh
Gilkes is also catalogued for sale.
Gilkes, bred by Stephen Magill,
Poyntzpass, Newry, is considered
to be a very stylish bull. He
is by the Sympa son Haltcliffe
Underwriter and out of the Rocky
sired dam Carhill Davina.
In addition to the bulls there
will be a tidy cohort of females
for sale who are also descended
from some of the breeds leading
sires. Drumadarragh Lara is by
Iveagh Gilkes and Drumadarragh
Lucy by the Irish-bred Virginia
Andy, who was Male and
Supreme Champion at the Royal
Highland Show back in 2009. Also
catalogued is Kilclass Lullaby,
by Ampertaine Elgin and Spage
Nettle by Haltcliffe Dancer.
