halo that encompasses an iridescent mélange of colors at the flower’s center, warmed by a goldenmetallic glow (at right).Wonders of Glass features works of equally spectacular magnitude. Toots Zynsky’s Appagamento(Fulfillment) is breathtaking and demonstrates a flawless technique that results inuncharacteristically sharp transitions between colors, a feat few glass artists have mastered asconsummately as Ms. Zynsky. Jon Kuhn’s Eye in the Center is not only one of the most strikingpieces with its countless eye-catching light refractions, but the work provides an exquisiteexample of refraction to support the Museum’s counterpart educational programming for K-12STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) lessons. Likewise, the Escaping My Mindsculpture by Julia Rogers and Robin Rogers provides a great connection as the two artists travel tothe Taubman Museum to demonstrate the creation of glass art using the Chrysler Museum of Art’smobile glassblowing studio. For the work that went into bringing this magnificent Wonders of Glass exhibition to fruitionand the additional artwork from the Goode’s Tiffany collection, I extend a warm thank you tothe staff and volunteers at the Taubman Museum of Art — in particular our expert curatorial teamthat skillfully and ever-so-creatively used light to showcase each piece in the most extraordinaryway. An equally warm thank-you goes to our Board of Trustees and Board Advisors, whoseleadership and support makes the Museum sustainable and impactful for our community forgenerations to come. This exhibition would, of course, also not be possible without the beneficence of Susan andDavid Goode. Their commitment to sharing their collection with the world and to making theirremarkable artwork available to our Museum audiences is on a level of generosity that is rarelyfound. Their support of the arts on a broader scale is widely known, and they have been honoredand recognized with countless awards for their contributions to and support of arts and culturethroughout the Commonwealth, including the Virginia Governor’s Arts Award. Accordingly, thisyear Susan was recognized for her extraordinary contributions to the arts and arts education in ourcommunity by being named the recipient of the Sheila S. Strauss Art Venture Award, presented bythe Taubman Museum of Art at the Museum’s annual Women’s Luncheon on May 4, 2023.The great glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany noted that “Color is to the eye what music is tothe ear.” Thank you, Susan and David, for providing a vibrant symphony for the eyes throughthe electrifying and aptly named exhibition, Wonders of Glass: From the Collection of Susan S. andDavid R.
