halo that encompasses an iridescent mélange of colors at the flower’s center, warmed by a golden

Wonders of Glass features works of equally spectacular magnitude. Toots Zynsky’s Appagamento
(Fulfillment) is breathtaking and demonstrates a flawless technique that results in
uncharacteristically sharp transitions between colors, a feat few glass artists have mastered as
consummately as Ms. Zynsky. Jon Kuhn’s Eye in the Center is not only one of the most striking
pieces with its countless eye-catching light refractions, but the work provides an exquisite
example of refraction to support the Museum’s counterpart educational programming for K-12
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) lessons. Likewise, the Escaping My Mind
sculpture by Julia Rogers and Robin Rogers provides a great connection as the two artists travel to
the Taubman Museum to demonstrate the creation of glass art using the Chrysler Museum of Art’s
mobile glassblowing studio.
For the work that went into bringing this magnificent Wonders of Glass exhibition to fruition
and the additional artwork from the Goode’s Tiffany collection, I extend a warm thank you to
the staff and volunteers at the Taubman Museum of Art — in particular our expert curatorial team
that skillfully and ever-so-creatively used light to showcase each piece in the most extraordinary
way. An equally warm thank-you goes to our Board of Trustees and Board Advisors, whose
leadership and support makes the Museum sustainable and impactful for our community for
generations to come.
This exhibition would, of course, also not be possible without the beneficence of Susan and
David Goode. Their commitment to sharing their collection with the world and to making their
remarkable artwork available to our Museum audiences is on a level of generosity that is rarely
found. Their support of the arts on a broader scale is widely known, and they have been honored
and recognized with countless awards for their contributions to and support of arts and culture
throughout the Commonwealth, including the Virginia Governor’s Arts Award. Accordingly, this
year Susan was recognized for her extraordinary contributions to the arts and arts education in our
community by being named the recipient of the Sheila S. Strauss Art Venture Award, presented by
the Taubman Museum of Art at the Museum’s annual Women’s Luncheon on May 4, 2023.
The great glass artist Louis Comfort Tiffany noted that “Color is to the eye what music is to
the ear.” Thank you, Susan and David, for providing a vibrant symphony for the eyes through
the electrifying and aptly named exhibition, Wonders of Glass: From the Collection of Susan S. and
David R. Goode.
