As the largest art museum in southwestern Virginia, the Taubman
Museum of Art serves as the region’s premier destination for
world-class arts and culture.
Founded in 1951 as the Roanoke Fine Arts Center, the Museum
now resides in a landmark facility designed by renowned architect
Randall Stout and named one of the nation’s best designed
museums by Architectural Digest.
The Museum’s collection focuses on American art and includes
more than 2,200 works from artists such as Romare Bearden,
Thomas Hart Benton, Thomas Eakins, Audrey Flack, Robert Henri,
Judith Leiber, Sally Mann, Norman Rockwell, John Singer Sargent,
and Purvis Young; twelve galleries support twelve to fifteen
exhibitions per year.
With a mission of bringing people and art together for discovery,
learning, and enjoyment, the Museum’s exhibitions as well as
community engagement and education programs typically reach
more than 80,000 guests per year, and were recognized recently by
the Institute of Museum and Library Services as a National Medal
Finalist. The Taubman Museum of Art is also among only one-third
of museums in the nation to offer free general daily admission.
