Mindy Lam Digital Catalogue - Flipbook - Page 13
With more than 60 pieces on display, Opulence
and Fantasy: Couture Gowns and Jewelry of Mindy
Lam is an exhibition that all visitors are sure
to enjoy, and is especially dedicated to the
wonderful patrons who support the Taubman
Museum of Art through our annual Women’s
Luncheon benefit. While we cannot convene
in the midst of a pandemic in the up-close and
personal way that we usually do, we share with
you the same spirit of connection, love, and
conviviality that have been the hallmark of our
luncheons over the many years.
On behalf of the Museum, I would like to thank
Mindy Lam, her daughter Kai, and Board Trustees
Meg P. Carter and Joanne Leonhardt Cassullo for
helping us make this exhibition possible. Mindy,
what can we say that hasn’t been said? Your
work is truly extraordinary. And so are you. Kai,
you have been the backbone behind this effort,
supporting your mother and our Museum in your
unsung role as a behind-the-scenes heroine.
Meg, as Board Benefit Chair you have outdone
yourself in leading the charge to hold our annual
event when circumstances seemed to make that
impossible. And Joanne, your inspiration, sharing
of ideas, and helping make exhibitions such as
this a reality are the greatest gifts a person could
give.
We also thank the Dorothea L. Leonhardt
Foundation, Inc., and the Dorothea Leonhardt
Fund at the Communities Foundation of Texas,
Inc., for ongoing support; and designers Rubin
Singer and Robert Molnar for the loan of
garments.
We share equal gratitude with the Taubman
Museum of Art’s Board of Trustees and staff, as
well as the Women’s Luncheon Host Committee
members and sponsors, along with volunteers.
It took many hands to make this reimagined
benefit event successful during the challenges
of COVID-19, and you all have been so generous
with your support and enthusiasm.
As I move to finish penning the conclusion to this
foreword, a smile comes to my face as I cannot
think of Mindy’s stunning creations without being
transported back to this past December as the
artist and I strolled through the Museum’s vault,
her eyes scanning our collection—and then the
delight I felt as I watched her eyes grow wide
with excitement when she discovered those
pieces that spoke to her. I wonder if she is aware
that each time she came upon such a piece, her
fingers began moving, and I realized that Mindy’s
fingers had already started working on the stories
she was going to tell ... stories from a world of
lightness and love, a world of hopes and dreams,
a world of astral planes and celestial heavens and
dimensions that defy imagination. Stories from
Mindy Lam’s world.
