25FEELINGANGRY?Anger is a perfectly normal healthyemotion. Everybody has different triggersand what causes one person to see redmight not bother the next person. Angeronly becomes a problem when it gets outof control or if expressed in aggressiveand violent ways.IDENTIFY YOURTRIGGERSThink about where and when you aremore likely to get angry, and see if there isa pattern. For example do you get angrywith certain people? When stressed?When drinking or using? At work? Orbehind the wheel?LISTEN TO YOUR BODYAnger stimulates the adrenal responsesystem which is the body’s way of coping,resulting in the fight or flight response.You may notice increased heart rate,tense muscles, increased temperature,rapid breathing or fist and teeth clenching.When this happens try to;▪ Pause and take a deep breath to avoidreacting straight away.▪ Breathe in for blue and out for red.▪ Walk away if you can. You can alwayscome back and talk when things havecalmed down.▪ Visualise yourself dealing with thesituation in a calm manner that’snon-aggressive but assertive.LOOK WITHINAnger is generally the result of otherdeeper feelings or emotions. Many menexperience anger due to frustration,loss/grief, pain, depression/anxiety andbeing treated unfairly.ASK FOR HELPIf you are struggling to manage your angerthere is plenty of support out there. Don’tleave it too late. If you have ever felt sofurious you have not been able to controlyourself, or if anyone has asked if youhave an anger problem then you probablydo.Other signs of being affected by angercould be less obvious and include:▪ always being irritable, little things makeyou angry and that is your main responseto situations▪ when you’re angry you’re aggressive ornasty▪ you may feel depressed and avoid beingaround friends or family▪ you may use drugs or alcohol to makeyou feel more relaxed or calm.
