YOUNG AT
HEART
Many men over the age of 50 can
experience significant mental health
difficulties, particularly in regard to isolation,
depression and risk of suicide. Many older
men are reluctant to seek help from health
or social services and also find that what is
offered by older people's organisations do
not meet their needs.
Men in general and older men tend to hide
how they may be feeling. This is often due
to cultural ideas about manhood suggesting
that men should keep their feelings to
themselves and that mental health problems
are a sign of personal weakness.
Men who hold on strongly to these
traditional ideas about masculinity may be
reluctant to seek help or even admit to
feeling sad. They may focus on physical
symptoms rather than their emotions. They
may also not recognise the signs of
depression.
