15SUICIDE, GRIEF& SUPPORTWe want New Zealanders to know what putspeople at risk of suicide, what warning signswe can all look out for, how to get help forourselves or someone else and what we cando to prevent people from becomingsuicidal. We want our families, whānau andcommunity to feel empowered to care fortheir loved ones when they need support.HELPING A MATE OUTIf you think someone may be suicidal, askthem. It could save their life.• Asking about suicide will not put thethought in their head.• Ask them directly about their thoughts ofsuicide and what they are planning. If theyhave a specific plan, they need help rightaway.• Ask them if they would like to talk aboutwhat’s going on for them with you orsomeone else. They might not want to openup straight away, but letting them knowyou are there for them is a big help.• Listen and don’t judge. Take themseriously and let them know you care.• Help them to find and access the supportthey need from people they trust: friends,family, kaumātua, religious, community orcultural leaders, or professionals.• Don't leave them alone – make suresomeone stays with them until they get help.• Support them to access professional help,like a doctor or counsellor, as soon aspossible. Offer to help them make anappointment, and go with them if you can.• If they don't get the help they need the firsttime, keep trying.
