recent Ecoinvent database, 1 kg of synthetic rubber
produced in Europe impacts 3.0 kg of CO2e. In
comparison, the average synthetic rubber produced
in the rest of the world has an impact of approx. 3.5
kg of CO2e.
Emissions from Transportation
Ocean freight has a smaller impact per tkm, however
since the distance from China to STEFFCA is greater
than the distance from Austria (STEFFCA’s main
supplier), the transportation emissions for 1 kg of
rubber from China are more than 2.5 times greater.
Conclusion
When you purchase 1 kg of synthetic rubber from
STEFFCA’s European supplier, the product has a
smaller carbon footprint compared to buying from a
non-European supplier. The difference is about 0.6
kg less CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) per kg of
rubber. In the future, further information from STEFFCA’s suppliers will allow us to calculate the footprint
per kg of product with better precision.
