Albus in
his foster
home!
Preventing and prosecuting cruelty
From Hurting to Home
August 25 might have been a normal day for many of us, but for
Albus and the other 46 animals living in squalor, it was a very
special day. One of Albus’ owners had recently passed away, and
the surviving family members reached out for help. On that day,
the SPCA of Texas Animal Cruelty Investigation Unit was able to
go on site to Albus’ home and rescue all 21 dogs and 26 cats on
the property, bringing them back to the SPCA of Texas for care.
Albus and his siblings were infested with fleas and various
intestinal parasites, making Albus and many of the other animals
anemic. They were underweight and unsocialized to human
affection.
“
His family needed our help. And thanks to support
from amazing donors, the SPCA of Texas was able to
create a better future for Albus, the other 46 animals,
and the family involved in the case.
”
said Courtney Burns, SPCA of Texas Chief Animal Cruelty
Investigator.
In addition to Albus’s other ailments, he was also positive for
heartworms. Heartworm disease is a serious disease in pets
which can be fatal if not treated. To give Albus the time he
needed to recover from heartworm treatment, he was placed
into a loving foster home for approximately two months. During
this time Albus blossomed by building stronger trust with
humans and with dogs other than his siblings.
As his health and confidence improved, a retired couple from
North Dallas saw his photo and story on the SPCA of Texas
website. Their beloved Catahoula Mix had recently passed away,
and they had decided it was time to open their heart and home
to another dog in need. Albus, now Argo, was the perfect fit.
Argo’s new family offered him lots of patience as he acclimated
to the surroundings and got used to being the only dog in the
home. Now transformed into a healthy, happy pup, Argo loves
his daily long walks with his dad and enjoys cuddling up on the
couch with his mom.
“
He started out very shy - we were feeding him by hand
to get him to eat. But in a short time he was coming to us
when called and was so excited to go for walks. He is such
a gem and we love his gentle soul.
said Albus’ adopters.
”
Albus’s story is a similar story for many pets at the SPCA of Texas.
“Last year, we investigated over 1,300 animal cruelty complaints
and were able to take more than 1,200 animals from cruelty
situations,” noted Burns. “Our donors make it possible for Albus
and so many others to go from hurting to a home.”
