Investing in our People
It Takes a Village
Caring for 6,000+ animals in our shelters and nearly 20,000
pets through our Community Impact programs is no small feat.
We know that our people – our staff, volunteers, advocates,
adopters and clients – are our strongest asset in creating a more
humane community for pets and their people. By engaging our
neighbors and community members in our work, our positive
impact for animals is able to expand beyond what our staff
could provide alone.
Whether through blistering summer heat or dangerous icy
roads, SPCA of Texas staff and volunteers are committed to
doing whatever it takes to care for animals in our shelters and in
our communities.
In 2022, the SPCA of Texas welcomed 837 new volunteers.
These local animal lovers joined our existing volunteer force
to provide more than 30,000 hours of service. Volunteers
take on key responsibilities including exercising the animals,
counseling potential adopters, managing Perry PRC donated
inventory, and even sewing new beds for shelter animals.
While many of our volunteers participate as individuals or in
families, local companies often roll up their sleeves to volunteer
as well. Through our Group Experience Program, teams from
local corporations and civic groups volunteer together to help
complete large projects.
In Fall 2022, volunteers from Chewy® were on site to help build
dog enrichment items. With dozens of hands at the ready,
the Chewy Gives Back® team was able to produce hundreds
of enrichment items for animals in our care. From puzzle
boxes to frozen treats to snuffle mats, the Chewy® team and
other Group Experience participants create transformative
enrichment activities and treats to help our animals have new
sensory experiences during their stay.
