98 cats arrive at the SPCA of Texas
Hurricane Ida Transfers
Hours before Hurricane Ida made landfall in the summer
of 2021, 98 cats arrived at the SPCA of Texas as shelters
in Galveston, Louisiana, and Mississippi evacuated their
intakes to make room for the influx of displaced cats and
dogs they would receive.
Director of Lifesaving Initiatives Kelli Eaves said preparations
for the cats was no small task.
“Each cat needed their own kennel, litter box, bedding, and
food and water, so we did that during the day, and the cats
arrived in the evening,” she said. “They all needed to be
evaluated, spayed and neutered, and vaccinated. But it was
done pretty quickly. And then they moved straight to
adoptions.”
Within weeks, all the cats were adopted through the
teamwork of the SPCA of Texas staff and volunteers,
demonstrating our commitment to providing exceptional
care and a loving home for every animal.
