Greetings of the season!
Michael Smuin once described each
section of The Christmas Ballet as a
greeting card. Each piece was meant to be
a complete and independent idea, uniquely
expressing the holiday season. In this age
of emails and texts often replacing the
traditional postal greeting, these cards are
a holdout. A nod to a different time, the
cards I receive from friends still dot my
windowsill every holiday season. Some are
silly, others serious, some secular, others
religious. When I see them all together,
they create a tapestry that connects me to
loved ones across the country.
I see a similar tapestry in The Christmas
Ballet. Now in its 30th year, Michael’s
original vision continues to thrive by
adapting over time. More than a dozen
guest choreographers have added
contributions through the years. New
commissions keep the ballet fresh, while
beloved favorites evoke nostalgia. The past
and future coexist in this celebration of the
season.
The Christmas Ballet is our holiday
offering to you. We hope it brings back
memories, inspires a chuckle, or adds a
bit of holiday magic. And thank you for
sharing your holiday with us.
