REUSEA ‘throw-away’ culture in consumer behaviourhas led to one of the world’s greatestenvironmental challenges. Single use plasticis an increasing issue, placing more emphasisand priority on reusing products across supplychains and in the workplace. SMI has replacedall single use eating utensils to recycledbamboo or paper alternatives and encouragethe reuse of any packaging at our distributioncentre.REPURPOSERepurposing products is commonly knownin the green community as upcycling, apopular methoc which can extend a productslifecycle through creativity and innovation. Werepurpose cardboard boxes where possible, both at our Head O昀케ce for storage and atour Distribution Centre. Suitable returnedproducts are collated, stripped of branding, and repurposed within our local communitiesas we donate to homeless charities.RECYCLERecycling is a commonly used word throughoutsociety, however very few truly understandits meaning and the process behind recyclingdi昀昀erent materials. Responsible recyclinghas been a key focus for SMI since we startedour sustainable journey. Since launchingour textile recycling scheme, we have beenexploring di昀昀erent methods we can o昀昀erour customers for their remaining uniformand PPE including footwear, safety helmets, gloves, and other plastic related items.Through extensive research we have gained a10deeper understanding of what it truly meansto recycle, and truthfully for the time beingnot all PPE can be 100% recycled. Morechallenging materials or products cannot be100% recycled, however there are other waysto prolong a product’s life cycle. Products canbe donated, repurposed, and converted intoSolid Recovered Fuel (SRF) which is energyfrom waste products. SMI have successfullyrecovered 370kg of waste, repurposed 3% withthe remaining 95% of products being recycled.SMIGROUPUK.COM | HELLO@SMIGROUPUK.COM | 01428 658333
