FUTURE OF THE SEA
Marine biodiversity refers to the abundance of species living in this habitat. This includes
every microorganism, animal and plant living in our oceans and seas, ranging from
barnacles to whales to coral reefs. Evidence suggests that marine habitats and biodiversity
are rapidly declining, at an estimated rate of 69% between 1970-2022. Marine biodiversity
plays a crucial role in achieving the three pillars of sustainable development: economic,
social, and environmental. As the ocean is the largest habitat for an extraordinary variety of
life, it serves as one of the primary sources of the world’s biodiversity.
