Coral reefs are often referred to as the “rainforests of the sea” due to their biodiversity and
ecological importance. They are the home of tiny coral organisms and provide habitats for
thousands of species of 昀椀sh, invertebrates and other marine life.

Seagrass meadows are underwater grasslands found in shallow coastal waters. They provide
important habitats for many marine species: such as 昀椀sh, sea turtles and invertebrates.
Seagrasses help protect coastlines from erosion and improve water quality by 昀椀ltering out
excess nutrients and carbon.

The open ocean refers to the deep waters beyond the continental shelf which is the home to
species from microscopic plankton to large marine mammals like whales.
