As part of our commitment to supporting the wider community and to ensure that SMI have
a positive impact on our immediate environment, we have partaken in the Great British Clean
Up week for the past few years in support of the Marine Conservation Society.
The Marine Conservation Society is a leading advocate for the ocean, combining scienti昀椀c
research, advocacy, education, and community action to protect marine ecosystems and
promote sustainable resource management. They actively collaborate with policymakers
and politicians to drive meaningful change. For example, their 2023 surveys revealed that
9 out of 10 items found on UK beaches were plastic, contributing to harmful microplastics
entering the ocean. One notable success was their campaign to introduce charges for plastic
bags, a policy change driven by evidence they provided. Following this initiative, data from
beach clean-ups shows an 80% reduction in the number of carrier bags washed up on
beaches since 2014.
Over the past two years, we have collectively removed 42kg of litter from our local beaches helping to create a safer environment for both the local community and marine life. We look
forward to continuing our litter-picking e昀昀orts into 2025 and beyond, playing our part in
protecting biodiversity and our marine ecosystems.
