PROJECT 3:FOREST RESTORATIONIN KENYAPlanting partner: EdenReforestation ProjectsKenya is a large country in east Africa, situated between Lake Victoria to thewest and the Indian Ocean to the east. Its capital, Nairobi, is a large regionalcommercial hub, and its economy isheavily reliant on two sectors as sourcesof external revenue which includesagriculture and tourism. Since the 1970s,this region has experienced widespreaddeforestation to support livestock, agriculture, and the production ofcharcoal. This deforestation, whencoupled with recent droughts in thearea, has severely harmed localwatersheds hydrologically. The environmental and social impactof this project are of the utmostimportance due to the Mau region’sresidents having dif昀椀culties withinadequate educational facilities, road systems, and restricted accessto fresh water. Millions of people’s14lives are impacted by the numerousrivers that 昀氀ow into Lake Victoria tothe west from the Mau forest. Foodsecurity and poverty have also been keydevelopment challenges in Kenya, withsome sources 昀椀nding that around 36%of the Kenyan population live below thepoverty line.Focusing on reforestation in this areais key to the local communities andhelping to combat climate change ona large scale. The Kass FM spans sixlocally designated reforestation zones,5,700 hectares and is situated in theMau region of Southern Kenya.Over the large area of the projectsite, which is set to span over a 7-yearproject period, it is estimated thataround 14.25 million Afromontanetrees will be planted across the Kass FMplanting site.SMIGROUPUK.COM | HELLO@SMIGROUPUK.COM | 01428 658333
