PROJECT 1: REFORESTING OUR
FUTURE MANGROVES IN
MADAGASCAR
Planting partner: Eden Reforestation Projects
Madagascar, located 400 miles off
the coast of east Africa in the Indian
Ocean, is the world’s second-largest
island country after Indonesia, and
Madagascar itself is the fourth-largest
island globally. It is recognised as a
biodiversity hotspot, with over 90% of its
wildlife unique to the island.
Through our partnership with Ecologi
and the Eden Reforestation Project, a
signi昀椀cant portion of SMI’s tree-planting
initiatives focus on Mangrove forests
in Madagascar. Recently, much of
Madagascar’s original forests have been
destroyed, disrupting local ecosystems,
animal populations, and human
livelihoods. The loss of entire mangrove
estuaries has also led to increased
coastal erosion, with soil washing away
into the sea.
This reforestation project, led by Eden
Reforestation, began in 2021 and will
continue until 2031, or until the site is
fully restored. The replanting efforts
focus on native mangrove species,
such as Avicennia marina, Rhizophora
mucronata, and Ceriops tagal.
EDEN through funded projects like Ecologi
and SMI’S Life On Land initiate the hiring
of local people to grow, plant and guard
the trees that have been planted to ensure
they reach full maturity. As well as restoring
forest ecosystems, Eden’s ’employ to plant’
methodology results in multiple positive
socioeconomic and environmental impacts.
