PROJECT 1: REFORESTING OURFUTURE MANGROVES INMADAGASCARPlanting partner: Eden Reforestation ProjectsMadagascar, located 400 miles offthe coast of east Africa in the IndianOcean, is the world’s second-largestisland country after Indonesia, andMadagascar itself is the fourth-largestisland globally. It is recognised as abiodiversity hotspot, with over 90% of itswildlife unique to the island.Through our partnership with Ecologiand the Eden Reforestation Project, asigni昀椀cant portion of SMI’s tree-plantinginitiatives focus on Mangrove forestsin Madagascar. Recently, much ofMadagascar’s original forests have beendestroyed, disrupting local ecosystems, animal populations, and humanlivelihoods. The loss of entire mangroveestuaries has also led to increasedcoastal erosion, with soil washing awayinto the sea. This reforestation project, led by EdenReforestation, began in 2021 and willcontinue until 2031, or until the site isfully restored. The replanting effortsfocus on native mangrove species, such as Avicennia marina, Rhizophoramucronata, and Ceriops tagal.EDEN through funded projects like Ecologiand SMI’S Life On Land initiate the hiringof local people to grow, plant and guardthe trees that have been planted to ensurethey reach full maturity. As well as restoringforest ecosystems, Eden’s ’employ to plant’methodology results in multiple positivesocioeconomic and environmental impacts.10SMIGROUPUK.COM | HELLO@SMIGROUPUK.COM | 01428 658333
