Sir John Lawes School
Extra Curricular Activities &
Leadership Opportunities
We want our students to enjoy their time in the Sixth
Form, whilst simultaneously developing important skills
for life.
In Year 12 all students have one week of Work
Experience where they are encouraged to seek
placements relevant to their future career aspirations.
There are many opportunities to enjoy activities
beyond purely academic study and we encourage all
students to take advantage of this. With over 80 clubs
to choose from there is something for everyone! Sixth
Formers can also set up their own club and are
encouraged to lead in the running of clubs for younger
students in the school. This requires time (one lunchtime per week) and commitment, but the rewards in
terms of pleasure and appreciation from the younger
students are immeasurable.
Students also have the opportunity to take part in
externally recognised schemes such as the Sports
Leaders Award. Each year students take part in the
Young Enterprise and Dragon9s Apprentice schemes
where they can gain invaluable entrepreneurial skills,
and we are very proud of the number of awards they
have gained over the years. As well as a Journal Club
for students interested in Science and a Senior
Reading Group for those of a more literary persuasion,
we have an active Debating Society for budding
politicians and anyone who wants to have their voice
heard.
Our Sixth Formers are role models to our younger
students and many Sixth Form students act as
academic mentors, meeting regularly with a younger
student to support their literacy or numeracy skills.
Alternatively, others choose to act as Peer Mentors to
help younger students in their transition to
secondary school. Others support in local primary
schools or in after school clubs, for example assisting
with French Language lessons or Music.
We have a range of visiting speakers throughout the
year, during Year 13 core enrichment lessons and also
during assemblies. Our external speakers have ranged
from university professors, the Disabled Ski Team of
Great Britain, engineers and drivers from Millbrook
Proving Ground, and former students who return to tell
us about their achievements. We also have annual
presentations from charitable and volunteering
organisations, including Oxfam.
As befits a school with a proud musical tradition, many
or our Sixth Formers are leading players in the school9s
bands and ensembles. Sixth Formers are also heavily
represented on the annual Music Tour, travelling to
perform at venues across Europe and the UK. Every
year we also have a Senior School drama production;
extravaganzas have included 8Cabaret9, the amazing
8Les Misérables9 and Arthur Miller9s thought-provoking
8The Crucible9.
