Money Matters
Grades 7 – 8
It’s never too late or too early for students to understand the importance of financial concepts. Students will learn how
to handle money matters such as setting financial goals, saving, budgeting, tracking expenses, good credit, avoiding
debt and investing. It’s the first step to raising financially savvy students!
Musical Theatre Junior Production (3-hour class)
Grades 5 – 8
If your student dreams of being in the spotlight, here’s their chance! Join us for a junior musical production where
students will have the opportunity to act, sing and dance. In this three-hour class, students will have a broad experience
in musical theatre including auditioning, vocal technique, developing character, and performing as a group. Opportunities
are available for all levels of experience. Class includes a performance for friends and family on the final day. All
participants are required to attend class on July 3rd. This year the class will be performing Bye Bye Birdie!
Oral Language and Vocabulary Development
Grades 5 – 8
This course enhances receptive and expressive language skills through activities including defining vocabulary, word
associations, categorizations and rapid word recall. Expressive oral language skills are strengthened through activities
emphasizing thought organization for more effective communication.
Organizational Skills and Study Strategies
(Non-Shelton Students Only)
Grades 5 – 8
Strong study strategies and organization skills can greatly contribute to a student’s academic success. This class teaches
techniques of organization, how to study effectively and efficiently, time management, awareness of personal learning
styles, textbook marking, hints on positive class participation and attitude, outlining strategies for effective writing
and project completion, note-taking, successful homework completion, and test-taking strategies. Upon completion
of this class, students will be better prepared to begin the school year with improved and new study strategies and
organizational skills and a greater awareness of personal learning styles.
(This course is not recommended for current or new Shelton students without the approval of the division head. The
study skills curriculum is taught daily throughout the school year.)
Reading Comprehension Strategies
Grades 5 – 8
Searching for strategies to improve your child’s reading comprehension? In this class students will receive direct
instruction for developing comprehension strategies, such as following directions, getting the facts, detecting sequences,
using context, getting the main idea, drawing conclusions, making predictions, creating imagery, and questioning.
Strategies like these make reading a pleasurable experience.
Simplified Science
Grades 3 – 5
Does your child ever wonder how and why some things are the way they are and do what they do? This class will lead
students to discover the answers to some of those questions. Students will conduct science experiments designed to
engage and entertain while supporting and introducing principles of science.
