MTA
SHELTON ACADEMIC LANGUAGE
APPROACH
Shelton’s Academic Language Approach utilizes the Multisensory Teaching Approach. MTA,
written by Margaret Taylor Smith. It is a comprehensive, integrated language arts program
designed for students with dyslexia. It addresses reading, decoding, comprehension, spelling and
composition, cursive handwriting, alphabet and dictionary skills. The ungraded curriculum
encompasses the structure and science of the English language. The foundation of this program
focuses on the rules that govern the patterns of our language. The content moves from simple to
more complex methods. It draws upon the Orton-Gillingham multisensory approach and
integrates Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, and Tactile techniques.
Instructor Training is available by invitation. Contact the SALA-MTA course director for more
