MERIT AWARDSMerit award winnerHENRICOPAULGREYLINGPRETORIAThrough here a flower passed is a steel sculpture thatinvites a physical interaction from the viewer. The artworkdraws from the dimensions of an archway that led to afamiliar room at my grandparent’s house. The archway is asymbol of life and death, having been the passage throughwhich many family members have moved, of whom mygrandmother is the only one yet to return, and evidently, she never will.By constructing the archway from pieces of rusted metal, the passage of time is reinforced through the shiftingcolours caused by the rust. But at the same time, thedifferent patterns and colours caused by the rust and theprocess of fixing different-sized steel patches togetherto form the whole create a parallel with the patches ofmaterial that my grandmother often used to fix my ormy brother’s clothes. Greyling invites the viewer to walkthrough the archway, allowing the act of movement tobecome a part of the artwork; a reminder of being alive.Through here a flower passedSteel220 cm x 115 cm x 20 cmSASOL NEW SIGNATURES • 2023 CATALOGUE17
