In this year in which the Association of Arts
Pretoria is celebrating its 75th birthday, it feels
like the Covid-pandemic is at last relinquishing
its grip on the world, and everybody can
breathe deeper and think more daringly. The
disappointments caused by the pandemic are
at last put aside, and with the generous support
of SASOL and the aid of South Africa’s most
talented young artists, this year’s Sasol New
Signatures Art Competition is as successful
and exciting as before.
adjudicating process is universally accepted as
reasonable and fair. Our dedicated judges have
succeeded in establishing objective criteria for
adjudicating art works. It is no wonder that
so many of South Africa’s best-known artists
are former award winners of the competition.
Most recently, Lebohang Kganye, who won
this award five years ago, was selected to
represent South Africa at the Venice Biennale
this year, one of the highest international
honours that can befall an artist.
The New Signatures Art Competition has been
around for three quarters of a century of which
more than three decades with the generous
and enthusiastic support of SASOL. Over the
years it established itself as South Africa’s most
prestigious launching pad for young talent into
the professional art world.
My sincere thanks to this year’s chairman,
Dr Pfunzo Sidogi, and to his hand-picked
judging panels for hard and selfless work
done. It was indeed a labour of love.
SASOL has not only been an important collector
of South African art but proved itself to be a true
patron of the arts. For this we extend our heartfelt
gratitude to the chairman of SASOL and to his
most capable and professional staff.
An event like the SASOL New Signatures Award
could only be regarded as prestigious if the
SASOL NEW SIGNATURES • 2022 CATALOGUE
However, there is one person
whose presence and knowledge are
indispensable and that is Nandi Hilliard,
who oversees and manages the whole
SASOL New Signatures Art Competition.
Without her and the generous assistance
and expertise of Stuttaford Van Lines,
this competition would not be possible.
