OUR APPROACH
Our aim is to play an active role where
our intent is aligned with governments’
agenda and serves the needs of our
fenceline communities.
Our approach to value creation and growing shared value is
guided by our sustainability statement:
“Advancing chemical and energy solutions
that contribute to a thriving planet, society
and enterprise”
This is aligned with global priorities as outlined in the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while responding to
local realities with targeted investments in our fenceline
communities.
It is in this context that we embark on initiatives within
defined areas that allow for the deployment of financial
and non-financial resources that are in line with global and
local priorities.
Our social investment approach is brought to life through a
multi-pronged, multi-year methodology to respond to the
priorities or our fenceline communities.
Following a process of understanding
our stakeholders’ issues and desired
outcomes, we identify social investment
focus areas and themes through which
programmes are implemented within
our fenceline communities nationally
taking into account human rights
principles.
This approach is based on understanding:
Creating social value through investment in society
involves an appreciation of the different issues of
stakeholders, with relevant solutions being crafted to
achieve the desired impact or value creation.
Streamlining our involvement and investments, aligned
with global priorities while responding to local realities,
has greater community impact.
Supporting the principles of human rights and nondiscrimination with a focus on previously disadvantaged
groups is essential.
Being a catalyst of positive change and economic
inclusion through our investments in education, skills
development, economic transformation and local
content, environmental stewardship and humanitarian
support through Sasol for Good.

Sasol in society: 2020 report
Due to the nature, location and scale of our activities the
most prevalent human rights issues relate to the
communities nearest our operations. We minimise
negative effects on local communities as informed by
due diligences or impact assessments.
These are addressed, among others, in our safety, health
and environmental (SHE) activities, product stewardship,
supply chain and security practices, and are monitored
by our operations with support from our Corporate
Affairs teams.
Providing grievance mechanisms and ensuring that
human rights concerns and complaints are appropriately
investigated and reported.
Engaging with and disclosing to our stakeholders our
approach and performance in a transparent manner.
